Garrett's Story: Opportunities and Teamwork in Electronic Systems
Over the last two years, Garrett’s development as a software engineer on the Textron Systems Electronic Systems business line has been everything he ever wanted: a unique learning experience with opportunities for growth and collaboration.
As a computer engineering major at the University of Maryland, Garrett came to expect that software engineering roles are often solitary, ticket-based positions. His first interview with Textron Systems left him with a different perspective.
“I loved the interview process. It was very different from traditional computer science interviews in that this was less focused on coding and more focused on people. I left feeling really good about everything, from the team I would be working with to the opportunity itself. There’s a lot to love about this role at this company.”
Garrett quickly learned his instincts proved true. “Carolyn, my boss, is very good at pushing us in the right direction without being too demanding, giving us good boundaries and keeping us on track. Honestly, she’s probably the best boss I’ll ever have. She gives me space to improve on my learning and explore different topics of interest.”
Managers at Textron Systems are encouraged to guide employees toward their passions and strengths. Given the nature of our work, ensuring the right team is in place makes this possible.
“We have a very good mix of engineers on the team, which helps us all flourish,” said Garrett. “We piggyback off each other’s strengths and let each other try new things. It’s a very forgiving group that loves working fast. We see progress daily and have a good time doing it.”
Opportunities, Balance and Future Advice
Garrett’s assignments are ever-changing, something that gets him excited every week. “I can’t even think of something I don’t like [about the job]. I actually enjoy coming to work and look forward to it every Sunday night. There’s a lot of interesting stuff I get to do here that’s already evolved over time. It’s great that I’ve gotten to experience so much opportunity, especially as a lower-level engineer.
“The realm of electronic warfare is just so fascinating because it’s cutting-edge. You see drones and jamming tactics and the importance of what we do. It’s very new, it’s changing very quickly, and the warfighter absolutely needs it. Knowing that we’re helping them is really important to me. I feel like I’m doing something with my life. I’m part of something that’s helping this country. That’s pretty awesome.”
One of Garrett’s favorite aspects of working for Textron Systems, aside from the work itself, is the alternative work schedule. “The 9/80s are amazing, and there’s no micro-managing. Get your hours in, get your work done. We’re very collaborative, so we’re always supporting each another to make sure that work-life balance stays in check.”
For anyone thinking of joining the team, Garrett has some advice that he, even now, makes sure to remember: “Show that you're willing to learn, grow your toolset and take on challenges. I think we have a lot of different opportunities here to explore different areas, whether you're a hardware, software or mechanical engineer. Whatever the case may be, there are lots of areas you can explore. My team, for example, is of the mindset that we're all still learning. This industry is always changing, so be sure to keep a growth mindset and look for new learning opportunities. There are so many people here with advanced skillsets who will talk to you if you ask, so take advantage of it.”
“I just really enjoy what I’m doing. I think that’s very special, and I hope other people feel the same way about Textron Systems in general.”
